Materials: Hard & Soft National Contemporary Craft Competition & Exhibition

ABOUT THE EXHIBITION

The Greater Denton Arts Council proudly presents the annualMaterials: Hard & Soft National Contemporary Craft Competition and Exhibition.

Recognized as one of the premier craft exhibitions in the country, Materials: Hard & Soft began in 1987 and was originally initiated by area artist Georgia Leach Gough. Now in its 29th year, the exhibition celebrates the evolving field of contemporary craft and the remarkable creativity and innovation of artists who push the boundaries of their chosen media.

Drawing hundreds of applications from across the United States annually, each year approximately 70 works are selected by an esteemed juror for exhibition at the Patterson-Appleton Center for the Visual Arts. Of those selected, Juror Awards in the amounts of $1,000, $750, $500 and $250 will be selected.

THIS YEAR’S JUROR

Elizabeth Kozlowski is the curator of the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft and has over 12 years of curatorial and gallery experience with a specialty in contemporary ceramics. Prior to joining HCCC, Kozlowski served as the Windgate Curatorial Fellow at Arizona State University Art Museum. During her time at ASU, she co-curated a national traveling exhibition,Crafting a Continuum: Rethinking Contemporary Craft. In 2010, she organized two major exhibitions for the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts Conference. She has also acted as Assistant Preparator for Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art and as the Gallery Director for Florida Craftsmen, Inc. Kozlowski has a Masters with Honors in museum studies through the School of Human Evolution and Social Change at Arizona State University and a BFA in studio art-ceramics from Florida Atlantic University.

AWARDS

The Greater Denton Arts Council will provide Juror Awards in the amounts of $1,000, $750, $500 and $250. Winners will be determined by the juror, on site, after the accepted works are received at the Patterson-Appleton Center for the Visual Arts.

HOW TO ENTER

To be considered for the 2016 exhibition, entries must be received by September 4, 2015. An online submission form is available HERE. If you would prefer to submit entries via mail, please contact exhibit@dentonarts.com for instructions.

NUMBER OF ENTRIES

Each artist is limited to three (3) entries.

ENTRY FEE

There is a $40 non-refundable fee, for up to three (3) entries. Payments must be submitted online at the time of application.

ELIGIBLE MEDIA

Works produced in any of the craft media: clay, fiber, glass, metal, paper, wood, or any combination of craft media, are acceptable. Entries must be the complete work of the submitted artist. Kits or commercially designed works will not be accepted. All work must have been completed within the past two years (2013-2015) and not previously exhibited at the Patterson-Appleton Center for the Visual Arts. Artists must reside in the United States.

SIZE LIMITATIONS

All work must be ready for installation. Submissions are restricted to a weight limit of NO MORE THAN 75 POUNDS. GDAC reserves the right to exclude any entry that presents complex exhibition or assembly problems.

SALES

A 30% commission will be retained from all work sold during the exhibition. Works which are not for sale must be clearly marked as such (NFS).

PUBLICITY

The exhibition will be publicized regionally and nationally. GDAC reserves the right to photograph any accepted work for the purpose of publicity.

LIABILITY

Entries will be insured by GDAC while in its custody (eligible time frame laid out in the artist contract) provided the artist has declared an insurance value not to exceed 70% of the selling price. Insurance value for pieces NFS should reflect fair market value.

DELIVERY & RETURN OF WORK

Artists are responsible for pre-paying all shipping charges to and from the exhibition site. Accepted works must be hand-delivered or shipped according to the instructions provided in the Artist Contract upon selection.

  • February 5 – April 1, 2016 | Materials: Hard & Soft exhibits at the Patterson-Appleton Center for the Visual Arts in Denton, Texas
  • April 5 – 7, 2016 | Hand-delivered work to be picked up by artist

AGREEMENT

No work may be withdrawn before the close of the exhibition. Sending an entry to this exhibition shall imply an agreement on the part of the sender to all conditions above.

DEADLINES AND EXHIBITION DATES

September 4, 2015 | Deadline for acceptance of entry materials by 5:00 p.m. at the GDAC offices (NOT a postmark deadline)

October 29, 2015 | Notification forms are mailed to all artists

November 20, 2015 | Artist contracts are due

January 4 – 8, 2016 | Shipped and hand-delivered pieces are due

February 5, 2016 | Opening Reception 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Award Ceremony 6:45 p.m.
