The Book as Art: Expanding the Limits

The Book as Art exhibition, July 18-Sept. 19 in the gallery at The Art Institute of Atlanta-Decatur, will be held in conjunction with the AJC Decatur Book Festival, the largest independent book festival in the country. It is expected to draw 85,000 book-lovers to downtown Decatur over Labor Day weekend (Aug. 29-31), demonstrating that books are cherished by multitudes in tangible and touchable form even as they morph into new forms and formats.

 

Material Hard and Soft Call

This annual competition and exhibition of contemporary crafts was started in 1987 and is now in it’s 28th year. Recognized nationally, Materials: Hard & Soft attracts hundreds of entries from every state in the union. Nationally recognized jurors select the show from slides and then award $5000 in prize money. The juror has always selected the winning pieces on-site. A catalog is printed. Many of the artists seen in the Materials exhibitions have been featured in national publications such as American Craft.

LensCulture’s Emerging Talent Awards 2014 is an international competition to showcase outstanding emerging photographers — from all cultures, all points of view, with no age limit.

Danielle Khoury, former TWU student and current adjunct faculty,has five of her photographic pieces in the juried exhibition Keep Looking Up. The exhibition is at the Frisco Association for the Arts. The show runs form May 5 – 31, 2014 with an opening reception and panel discussion May 7 from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm (panel discussion at 7:30 pm).

Call to Artists for 897 Square Show

The 2014 summer show, 897 Square, is open to all artists living in and working in or otherwise affiliated with Tarrant County.

All visual media are eligible, including drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, installation and video (artist must supply all required electronic equipment). Maximum size for 2D works is no larger than 5’X5’, while 3D must be able to fit though a standard sized doorway. Each artist can submit upto 3 pieces and all artwork must be ready to hang or display.

The exhibition will run from June 12th, 2014 to July 31st, 2014. The opening reception will be on Thursday, June 12th, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM.
