Congratulations to Texas Woman’s University alumna, Ashley Kauschinger, for having her series, Questions of Origin, featured on Float Photo Magazine. Click here to view her portfolio.

“Float magazine was launched in March 2014 with the first issue “Into the Wild”. Float was created by Dana Stirling & Yoav Friedlander in the hopes of creating a new, fresh and young look at today’s Photography scene. We hope to create issues that will motivate us and others in creating new images and art. Inspire one another and share our creations with people all over the globe. Bringing together well-known photographers as well as young artists to have them share and learn in order to offers opportunities for exposure and community. We are a non-profit magazine, working in the online scene. Located in queens NYC.”

Ashley received her BFA from Savannah College of Art and Design and her MFA from Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas. Ashley is also the Founding Editor of Light Leaked, an online photography magazine that creates dialogue and community. Ashley lives and works in Columbia, SC, where she is an adjunct professor at the University of South Carolina.

A Certain Displacement is a collaborative project between three emerging North Texas artists: Rachel Rushing, Kristina Smith, and Ashley Whitt. Each artist explores transitory states of being related to their shared experiences of commuting, collaborating, working, and living across multiple social geographies. Through the investigation of place and identity, this project encompasses video and a combination of historical and contemporary photographic processes to create installations that invite viewers to become immersed in surreal, disorienting environments.

The title specifically references the experience of being an adjunct instructor in the Dallas / Fort Worth area. Contemporary higher education is undergoing great scrutiny, in part due to the still-recent economic recession of 2008. With external pressures pushing against rising tuition costs, much of America is now re-examining the value of higher education and the cost of attendance. As a result of this examination, new light is being shed on those in instructional positions. According to the American Association of University Professors, as much as 76% of faculty across all types of institutions are adjunct, or contingent, faculty.

As members of the group of 76%, these three artists use a variety of photographic processes to explore their circumstances. Processes: this word refers to chemical, mechanical, or digital changes occurring. It also refers to a compulsion found in each artist to work through, to operate in a way that meets their pragmatic needs and simultaneously fulfills their personal creative practices. Processes become rituals to make sense of a lifestyle that is often overwhelming, unpredictable, and ultimately contingent.

The exhibition is at Silver Eye Center for Photography in Pittsburgh, PA, from April 3 – June 13, 2015. There is an closing reception Saturday, June 13, 2015, at 6:00 PM.

A World Imagined features the work of Kelli Connell (Chicago, IL) and Sara Macel (Brooklyn, NY) who each explore the emotional and psychological terrain of personal relationships. Each artists’ projects offer opportunities to reflect on authorship, on photographic construction, and on ways in which we define relationships through our subjective experiences of them. Kelli Connell’s photographs in Double Life invent a relationship that visualizes, through digital manipulations, questions around intimacy and identity; Sara Macel’s May the Road Rise to Meet You is a collaborative examination of her relationship with her father at the end of his career.

The exhibition is organized by Leo Hsu, adjunct professor, Carnegie Mellon University, writer, and photographer, and David Oresick, Executive Director, Silver Eye Center for Photography.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

Kelli Connell’s (b. 1974) body of work entitled Double Life has been widely received and included in numerous national solo and group exhibitions. Her work is in the collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Columbus Museum of Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Museum of Contemporary Photography, Microsoft, The Haggerty Museum of Art, The Philadelphia Museum of Art and The Dallas Museum of Art. Publications include MP3: Midwest Photographers’ Publication Project (Aperture and The Museum of Contemporary Photography), Vitamin Ph: New Perspectives in Photography (Phaidon) and Photo Art: The New World of Photography (Aperture). Connell’s first full-length monograph entitled Kelli Connell: Double Life was released by DECODE Books in August 2011.

Sara Macel (b. 1981) received her MFA in Photography, Video & Related Media at the School of Visual Arts in 2011 and her BFA in Photography + Imaging from New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts in 2003. Her work has been internationally exhibited and is in various private collections, including the Cleveland Museum of Art, Harry Ransom Center, and the Center of Photography at Woodstock. Her recent honors include Magenta Foundation’s Flash Forward, Top 50 Photographer’s in Photolucida’s Critical Mass Award, and she was named a winner in the New York Photo Festival. In 2012, Sara received the Individual Photographer’s Fellowship Grant from the Aaron Siskind Foundation. Her first monograph, May the Road Rise to Meet You, was published by Daylight Books in 2013, and a traveling exhibition of that work was shown in solo shows in 2014 at the Center for Photography in Woodstock and the Houston Center for Photography before coming to Silver Eye. She recently self-published a book of her series titled Kiss & Tell. In addition to her freelance work, Sara currently teaches photography at SUNY Rockland and was an artist-in-residence at The Wassaic Project in upstate New York.

ABOUT THE CURATOR

Leo Hsu is an instructor in the photography program at Carnegie Mellon University, and holds a PhD in Anthropology and a Certificate in the Program in Culture and Media from New York University. His writings appear in the online magazine Fraction (fractionmagazine.com). His previous collaborations with Silver Eye Center for Photography include HomeFrontLine: Reflections on 10 Years of War Since 9/11 (2011) and No Job No Home No Peace No Rest: An Installation by Will Steacy (2012).

Sip on a delicious cocktail generously provided by Pittsburgh’s own Wigle Whiskey and enjoy this last chance to see A World Imagined. A closing reception for the exhibition will follow the talk.
