Call for Entry | Wanderlust

Due: March 19, 2016
Wanderlust | 23 Sandy Gallery

23 Sandy Gallery invites artists to participate in Wanderlust, a juried exhibition of book art about travel and place.

THEMEWanderlust is a word that can mean many things, but first and foremost it conjures travel, exploration and place. Wanderlust, a German word, made from “wandern,” which means walking, as in to take a walk, and “Lust,” desire. It can also mean a strong desire to travel or discover new places. Feel free to expand your definition of Wanderlust—explore, travel, inhabit—even if only between the pages.

MEDIA –This exhibit is open to handmade book and paper arts related works created as either edition or one-of-a-kind. Artist books, sculptural books, book objects, altered books, zines, and broadsides are all encouraged.

JUROR –This exhibition will be juried by Laura Russell, owner and director of 23 Sandy Gallery.

AWARDS – Three artists will receive Best of Show Awards. Winners are selected upon installation of the show. In addition, we will also award a Library Purchase Prize, as voted on by our library customers. This work will be purchased by the gallery and donated to one of the voting libraries.

MAY 28, 2016, 4:00 – 6:00 P.M. – Artists Reception at 23 Sandy Gallery
JULY 30, 2016 – Exhibition Closes at 23 Sandy

ONLINE AND PRINT CATALOGS 23 Sandy Gallery will publish a complete online catalog plus a full-color print catalog illustrating this exhibition. Entering this exhibition constitutes agreement that images may be used for publicity purposes.

DISPLAY OF BOOKS Here at 23 Sandy Gallery we feel very strongly that artist books need to be handled to be fully appreciated. Handi-Wipes are provided for gallery customers along with a friendly word about proper book handling. However, if your book is delicate and you would prefer it not be handled, please let us know and we will be happy to put a “do not touch” sign on it or display it behind glass. If your book is an edition you are welcome to send a display copy.

SIZE LIMITATIONS – All works are limited to 24 inches in any direction when displayed. One exception to this rule is long accordion books, which may extend out longer. Accordions allow us to shorten up the display width without losing the impact of the book.

FRAMING – Wall-hung work can either be hung framed or unframed attached with magnets and must include proper hanging hardware. If you are shipping framed work we recommend you ship the work with acrylic instead of glass.

ENTRIES – A maximum of three works may be submitted per artist. Work must be no more that five years old. Entries must be received online no later than the date listed above. All artists submitting to this exhibition will be notified via email. The gallery reserves the right to decline any accepted artwork upon delivery if the condition or quality is other than represented in the electronic entry. All submissions will be made online.

FEES – A $25 non-refundable entry fee covers up to three works and is payable upon submission. Just to clarify, the entry fee covers one, two or all three works, it is not a per work fee. When entering online you will pay via Paypal or any major credit card. You do not need a Paypal account to pay via credit card.

SALES – All work submitted must be for sale. We are a commercial gallery, and we firmly desire to support artists with more than just a line on their résumé. The artist receives 60% of the sale price. Sales sometimes happen after the exhibition. If a request to purchase artwork comes directly to the gallery after the artwork is returned to the artist, the gallery works with the artist and client to facilitate the sale. The terms of the consignment agreement herein are extended to govern such a situation.

PHOTOGRAPHS OF YOUR WORK – You may submit up to four photographs for each piece you are entering in this show. Remember, your photographs will be used not only for curating the show. They will also be used in a high-quality, printed catalog, so make sure they are high quality photographs. Most of our customers are university and museum libraries. Put your best photo forward as you never know who might notice your artwork. The 23 Sandy Blog features several articles about photographing your work. You can read them here.

PREPARING YOUR IMAGES FOR ENTRY – You may upload up to four views each of your three works submitted. Some key points to remember:

  • Name your files as yourlastname-1-a.jpg, yourlastname-1-b.jpg, yourlastname-1-c.jpg, yourlastname-2-a.jpg, etc. Your last name is followed by a HYPHEN and then the artwork number, which corresponds with the entry number on the online entry form. Another HYPHEN and then the a, b, or c letter are the additional views of that work. Like this:yourlastname-1-a.jpg
  • All JPGs must be 300 ppi, sized to 7 inches (or 2100 pixels) wide or tall in the longest direction. Images should be print quality RGB files.
  • Composite images are not acceptable. One view per image submitted only.
  • Black backgrounds on your photographs are not acceptable. Please shoot your photos on a neutral gray or white background. This allows us to present a cohesive printed catalog. (Black backgrounds are also bad because books lose shadow, dimension and scale on black backgrounds. Same happens when shooting white pages against a white background. We recommend gray for best results.)
  • Photos shot with a cell phone do not have enough resolution or quality for hi-resolution printing, which is important for our print catalogs. Please shoot with a real digital camera that has at least 8 megapixels.

SHIPPING – All artwork accepted into this show will ship to 23 Sandy Gallery. All shipping and shipping insurance costs to and from the Gallery are the responsibility of the artist and complete instructions will be provided upon acceptance into the show.

INTERNATIONAL ARTISTS – Artists residing outside of the United States are welcome to enter this exhibition. The exhibition entry fee of $25 must be paid in US funds.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR LOSS OR DAMAGE – The Gallery is insured and shall be responsible for the safekeeping of all consigned artwork while in the Gallery’s possession. The Gallery shall be strictly liable to the artist for loss or damage (except for loss due to earthquake, flood or damage resulting from flaws inherent in the artwork), to the full value artist would have received from the Gallery if the artwork had been sold.

International Juried Exhibition : Theme: Faux

Fake wood, plastic surgery and imitation cheese, the world around us is staged with facades. We are surrounded by stand in’s for the original, fabricated neighborhoods with identical houses and plastic rocks. Knock off designer goods and mass production meet our consumer demand and people find real comfort in artificial companionship. It is becoming rare to find a genuine person place or thing and the word authentic has been used so often, it no longer means anything. All artist interpretations on this theme are encouraged. All photographic processes are welcome.
