Words like the following can be used when discussing experimental photography: solarization, photogram, vortograph, rayograph, photomontage, manipulated negatives, time-lapse, double exposure, sandwiched negatives, photo-assemblage, cameraless, light-box, pinhole, camera obscura, collage, photo sculpture.

This is not a finite list of terms, but the idea is there are a multitude of ways to make a photograph, and some not conceived yet. The camera may or may not be used; the principle is mainly creative use of light.

Use of these methods started in 1826, when the first permanent photograph was

invented by Nicéphore Niépce.

PDNB Gallery will feature many artists who have created new pathways using light to extract unique images. This group exhibition will showcase many examples of these methods. Featured artists include:

SPE Student Scholarships

SPE STUDENT AWARDS FOR INNOVATIONS IN IMAGING

All SPE student members are eligible to apply for a scholarship to offset the cost of attending SPE’s 2015 National Conference in New Orleans, March 12-15, 2015. Ten awards are offered based on merits of submitted portfolios and include a $550 travel stipend to attend the national conference, a 2015 national conference fee waiver, and a one-year membership to SPE.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
Applicants must be currently matriculated students enrolled at a post-secondary institution as an undergraduate or graduate student
majoring/concentrating in photography not graduating before the end of the academic year 2014-2015.
Applicants must be student members of SPE or become members before submitting their scholarship application. Visit http://www.spenational.org/members/join to join or renew.
Applicants are not eligible to receive scholarship awards for two consecutive years.

This year’s jurors are SPE national board members serving on the Awards and Recognition Committee: Amy Holmes George (Chair), Claude Baillargeon, Bill Gaskins, and Rebecca Nolan.

PREPARE TO SUBMIT THE FOLLOWING
A cohesive body of work with no more than FIVE images. Images around 1280 x 1280 px @ 72 ppi are ideal for good image quality and fast upload.
A succinct artist statement and a description of the conceptual basis of your work and its technical qualities, including a description of processes used (3,000 characters or less, approx. 480-600 words).
A statement addressing how attendance at the conference will benefit you, as well as an overview of prior involvement with SPE or other arts organizations.
A brief resume, including name, address, phone number, email address and current institutional affiliation, and educational and professional experience.
Contact information for a current photography professor (include name, title, email, and phone number).

2015 SPE/MCC Film and Video Festival

SPE Multicultural Caucus   /   Deadline: 10/15/14

The SPE MultiCultural Caucus is looking for original works in film or video to screen at the SPE/MCC Film and Video Festival at the 2015 Annual Conference in New Orleans this March. rnrnThis year we will have a screening room and also show the festival over the hotel’s TV system, so conference attendees can see your work with friends, or screen the videos in their own rooms. The list of selected works and artists’ bios will also be printed in the conference catalog. Don’t miss this chance to have your work seen by one of the world’s most discerning and important audiences- your fellow SPE members! rnrnThe festival is curated by SPE MCC member Neil Chowdhury.

This is a SPE members’ only exhibit, so please be sure to update your SPE membership in order to have your work considered for the festival.

Requirements

Multi Cultural means the festival is open works by and about people of every culture. We are seeking time-based works that explore issues of cultural identity in the broadest possible sense. There is no restriction on subject matter, genre, or medium. We hope that this festival can highlight the amazing diversity and talent to be found amongst members of SPE.

Short works (under 10 minutes) are preferred, but if you have a longer piece please contact the curator directly and we may be able to find a way to screen a trailer, excerpt or shorter edit.

Please email a short written synopsis/statement for the piece and a short artist bio to Neil Chowdhury at scoopneil@gmail.com. Include:
– Title of Work
– Name of Artist/Director,
– Date of Production
– Medium
– Run Time in Min:Sec.
– Include full credit information for collaborators, as well as any restriction you may have on distribution and reproduction of the work.

Central Trac Professional Practices

Led by Dallas and Fort Worth-based arts professionals the workshops are open to both emerging and established artists and geared towards those who wish to hone their skills and receive guidance while professionalizing their practice.

Writing Your Bio, CV and Artist Statement
This workshop will guide participants through the steps of drafting their artist biography, CV and artist statement. The session will review what type of information should be included in these documents and how they can be used to communicate crucial information about artists and their practices. Participants should come to the workshop with a printed copy of their CV and a printed rough outline of their artist statement.

In this session participants will be provided with an introduction to art documentation. Participants will receive helpful hints in order to learn how to photograph and present their work to juries, submission committees and applications in the best way possible. Portfolio Review
Artists will have the opportunity to have their work reviewed by a Dallas/Fort Worth-based curator in a 15-minute session. Participants should come to the session prepared to discuss their practice and should bring examples of their work in a portfolio, on a flash drive, CD or DVD disc and should bring no more than 15 images/ examples of their work with them. Prior registration is required and space is limited, participants are expected to arrive to their scheduled session on time. If you attend the first two workshops, you will have priority registration for the Portfolio Review session.

2015 FELLOWSHIPS CALL FOR ENTRIES Juried by Paul Kopeikin, Owner, Kopeikin Gallery (Los Angeles, CA) Deadline is October 24, 2014 at midnight. Two fellowship recipients will be awarded $3,000 each and a solo exhibition at HCP in the summer of 2015. One Houston-based artist (residing within a 100 mile radius of Houston including the Beaumont, Galveston, and College Station areas) will receive the Carol Crow Memorial Fellowship and another artist from anywhere in the world, outside the Houston area, will receive the HCP Fellowship. Paul Kopeikin, Owner, Kopeikin Gallery (Los Angeles, CA) will jury the fellowship selection.

The competition is open to all artists working in photographic and lens-based work. – Any photographic process is acceptable as long as it is:

  • Original work
  • The body of work is still in development within the last two years
  • The body of work submitted as a whole has not been exhibited in a previous HCP Exhibition.
FEES:

There is a $35 entry, which includes entry for 10 images or video. The maximum number of images artist can submit is 10. You are not required to submit 10 images. You may submit more than one entry. Each entry is $35.

RULES FOR ENTRY:

All submissions will go through CALLFORENTRY.ORG, you can create a free account – Entrants should upload up to 10 images or videos, an artist statement, and a resume/bio – Acceptance will be based on the body of work by each artist rather than on individual images.

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:
  1. Verify your HCP Membership If you are a member but do not know your membership number please contact Sinai Tirado at 713-529-4755 x16 or sinai@hcponline.org If you are not a member of HCP you can become one online HERE YOU MUST BE AN HCP MEMBER TO COMPLETE YOUR SUBMISSION!
  2. Prepare your images and all related texts. Carefully edit a group of no more than 10 images or videos that describe your current lens-based work. Images should be 72 dpi and larger than 1920 px. You will also need to have the following information available:
  • an artist statement
  • a resume, c/v, or bio\
  • specific information for each piece: Title (for identification purposes) Year of exposure Size (height X width) Medium of finished work (inkjet print, chromogenic print, etc.) Pricing (estimate of final print value)

3.  Uploading Images and text to CALLFORENTRY.ORG Create a free account on callforentry.org or log in to an existing account to upload your images and text. Upload images to My Profile.

4. Apply to Houston Center for Photography’s call for entry

  • log on to callforentry.org and make sure you are logged into your profile
  • on the top tool bar click Apply to Calls
  • scroll through the list to find Houston Center for Photography (it is set default to sort alphabetically so we should be almost halfway down the page)
  • click APPLY TO THIS CALL
  • accept the agreement for submission
  • Copy/Paste all text (Artist Statement, Resume, CV) into appropriate text boxes
  • Answer the remaining questions (you will need your membership number)
  • Add the images from your profile you would like to submit for this call for entry
  • Save your application
  • Complete your submission

5. Submit and Payment Confirm that you are a member of HCP. If you are unsure of your membership please email info@hcponline.org. If you are not currently a member of HCP please sign up for a membership HERE before completing your submission. We will contact all non-members at the close of the call and notify them that their submissions will be ineligible for selection and will not be included in the submissions reviewed by the Juror. After you receive an email receipt of payment, your submission process is complete.
