THE LUCIE AWARDS

The photography community from countries around the globe will pay tribute to the most outstanding photography achievements presented at the gala ceremony, the Lucie Awards. Honors will be given for Lifetime Achievement, distinguishing some of the world’s greatest men and women whose life’s work in fashion, photojournalism, advertising, portraiture, sports, documentary and fine art photography, merit the highest acclaim by their peers. Each year, the Advisory Board nominates deserving individuals across a variety of categories which will be honored during the Lucie Awards ceremony. Once the nominations have been received, the votes are tallied and an honoree in each category is identified. The title winners of IPA: Photographer of the Year, Deeper Perspective, Discovery of the Year and Moving Images are announced at the Lucies and are awarded cash prizes and the Lucie Statue.

LUCIE STATUE – HISTORY

The statue was influenced by two photographers, Frantisek Drtikol and E. O. Hoppe. “Lucie” is the sculptural form inspired by the synthesis of two famous photographic images from the first half of the twentieth century. Taken from the Latin word, “lux” for “light”, Lucie is a tribute to the influence that light plays in photography. In the past years more than 50 top international photography masters have been honored by the Lucie Awards.

BEST OF SHOW EXHIBITION

Each year, the IPA will invite an established curator to select 45 images from both the professional and non-professional pools of 1st, 2nd, or 3rd winners to be exhibited in an exclusive show in New York City, during the week leading up to the Eleventh Annual Lucie Awards event. The Exhibition will then travel to various countries to be included in photo festivals, galleries, and other photography related events.

IPA ANNUAL

The work of all first, second and third place winners, and the names of honorable mentions will be published in the high-quality, full-color, International Photography Annual.

Don’t miss this opportunity to participate in the world’s premiere showcase of photographic talent. Send us your best work today.

A Certain Displacement, Cliff Gallery | Kristina Smith and Ashley Whitt

11334088_10206772357655605_5925022693003359339_o

Congratulations to Texas Woman’s University Alumnae, Kristina Smith and Ashley Whitt, for their group exhibition, A Certain Displacement, in Cliff Gallery at Mountain View College. The exhibition is June 15 – August 7, 2015, with a reception on June 20, 2015, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.

A Certain Displacement:
Rachel Rushing, Kristina Smith, and Ashley Whitt

Exhibition: June 15 – August 7, 2015

Reception: Saturday June 20, 2015 | 5:00 PM – 7:00 PM

A Certain Displacement is a collaborative project between three emerging North Texas artists: Rachel Rushing, Kristina Smith, and Ashley Whitt. Each artist explores transitory states of being related to their shared experiences of commuting, collaborating, working, and living across multiple social geographies. Through the investigation of place and identity, this project encompasses video and a combination of historical and contemporary photographic processes to create installations that invite viewers to become immersed in surreal, disorienting environments.

The title specifically references the experience of being an adjunct instructor in the Dallas / Fort Worth area. Contemporary higher education is undergoing great scrutiny, in part due to the still-recent economic recession of 2008. With external pressures pushing against rising tuition costs, much of America is now re-examining the value of higher education and the cost of attendance. As a result of this examination, new light is being shed on those in instructional positions. According to the American Association of University Professors, as much as 76% of faculty across all types of institutions are adjunct, or contingent, faculty.

As members of the group of 76%, these three artists use a variety of photographic processes to explore their circumstances. Processes: this word refers to chemical, mechanical, or digital changes occurring. It also refers to a compulsion found in each artist to work through, to operate in a way that meets their pragmatic needs and simultaneously fulfills their personal creative practices. Processes become rituals to make sense of a lifestyle that is often overwhelming, unpredictable, and ultimately contingent.

Call for Entry | Water

Screen Shot 2015-03-22 at 3.38.36 PM

Due: March 30, 2015
Water | A Smith Gallery
Juror: Gayle Stevens

wa – ter : rain, tears, agua, springs, drink, rivers, wet, steam, flood, moisture, lakes, humidity, damp, soak, ocean, wash, aquatic, splash…

“The waterskiing bobble heads floated just on the surface.  Belle sat on the gravelly shore, her young son sat in the lap of her new boyfriend, Chance, repeatedly asking why his Mommy’s car was in the lake.

Belle was a water baby.  Her mother and her part-time astrologist sister set her on her watery path early, constantly reminding her of her Aquarian destiny: living in, around and with water.  Being born on February fourteenth gave her her name.  Her Grandmother, Belle Tran Ashcroft, a Vietnamese/French war bride was also born on Valentine’s Day in an art deco teak and brick house on a coffee, rubber and cashew plantation northwest of what was then Saigon.

She was a South Vietnamese water skiing champion.  She met her future husband when he and his soldier buddies were skiing on “her” lake during a weekend of R and R in 1967.  He was also raised on a plantation, in Mississippi.

Grandmother Belle spoke French fluently along with her native Vietnamese.  She struggled always with English, easily moving herself to tears of frustration or amusement when trying to create english vowel sounds or recount a story of her youth.  Sitting there by the lake, with her reasonably new automobile mostly submerged in the clear blue water, Belle looked down at the tears beading up on her tanned mid section, remembering Grandmother Belle trying to say the word fry…”   from the story “Tow Rope” by Franklin Cincinnatus

Juror:
Gayle Stevens will be the juror for “water”. Ms. Stevens has worked in antiquarian photographic processes for over twenty years. Her chosen medium is wet plate collodion for its fluidity and individuality. She exhibits extensively across the United States, United Kingdom, the Netherlands and China. Ms. Stevens received an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 1999. She is an educator, speaker, juror, curator and an active member of the photographic community. Named one of the Critical Mass Top Fifty Photographers for 2010 and 2014, she received second place in the Lens Culture International Exposure Awards in 2011 and was named a finalist for the Clarence John Laughlin Award in 2012 and 2014. Her work has been featured in Fraction, Square, Shots, Diffusion, B + W Photography, South by Southeast and Fuzion magazines and in Inventing Reality, New Orleans Visionary Photography. North Light Press published a book of Stevens’ work, Calligraphy, in their 11 + 1 Signature series. Christopher James will feature her work in the third edition of The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes. Stevens’ work is widely collected and is part of the permanent collection of the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, the New Orleans Museum of Art, the Rockford Museum of Art and the Center for Fine Art Photography and recently the University of New Mexico Art Museum, among others. A member of the Posse photo collective, she divides her time shooting in Pass Christian, Mississippi and Downers Grove, Illinois, where she resides. Stevens is represented by Tilt Gallery, Catherine Couturier Gallery, and Gallery Kayafas and Paul Cava.
