Joy currently resides in Youngstown, Ohio, where she is an Associate Professor of Photography at Youngstown State University. She received her B.F.A. from Miami University, Oxford, OH and her M.F.A. from Texas Woman’s University.
Congratulations to Joy Ellis for being featured by the University of North Texas News. Joy, who took a class in the College of Visual Arts during the fall 2015 semester, made an intricately detailed book featuring the stories of the Kurdish family from Iraq who were refugees in Iran. She got the stories from her sister who lives in Iraq with her husband, a worker for a non-governmental organization there.

Joy graduated with her BFA from the University of Texas, Arlington and currently attends Texas Woman’s University to obtain an MFA in Art with a concentration in photography and secondary concentration in intermedia.

All About Photo Awards, The Mind’s Eye is open to all individuals who have reached the age of majority in their jurisdiction of residence at the time of entry. It is open to professional and amateur photographers alike.
Is there a theme?
No. What your mind sees and decides to photograph is totally up to your intuition.

Applications are now being accepted for the 2016 Snider Prize, a purchase award given to emerging artists as they leave graduate school. MoCP’s curatorial staff will select three artists for this award: one winner will receive $2,000, and two honorable mentions will each receive $500. These funds will go toward the purchase of work to be added to MoCP’s permanent collection. The prize is open to MFA students currently in their last year of study and is sponsored by MoCP patrons Lawrence K. and Maxine Snider. See below for more information on past Snider Prize recipients.

Congratulations the Texas Woman’s University Alumnus, Arthur Fields, for his solo exhibition, Curated Memory, at the Weitman Gallery at Washington University in Saint Louis, Missouri. Exhibition runs January 14, 2016 – February 12, 2016.

What is it about the things that we see and experience on a daily basis via cell phone cameras that make them worth capturing and sharing? Is it the thrill of seeing things that might not have been seen by the casual glance? Is it the lure of “likes and retweeting” of the said image? It is the joy of realizing how much beauty is overlooked in our daily viewing experience? Whatever it is, the images that we choose to share are but a fraction of the total number of images that we view on a daily basis. Of the millions of images that we take or store in the “cloud,” it is the few that are shared with others that reinforce recall and experience.
Curated Memory by Arthur Fields, BFA 08, is an exploration of how memory is influenced in the digital age. Through the use of social networks and the printed image, mundane scenes are shared with the world. These mundane scenes are revisited through the print to further develop it as a memory. Upon seeing the image, the brain informs us that we have seen or had that experience before. This work promotes the intuitive recognition of everyday moments—moments that we all share. Like the careful construction of the vanishing “scrapbook,” Fields selects the memories that he wishes to re-live.
This group of images represents approximately 365 days worth of image sharing by @artfields on Instagram. These images are shown in the order posted with all associated information plus one added bonus: the addition of a quote, representing a comment or audio blurb overheard by the artist within 48 hours of taking the image. The resulting experience triggers both visual and auditory memories.
*Daniela Schiller (born October 26, 1972, in Israel) is a neuroscientist who leads the Schiller Lab for Affective Neuroscience at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. She is best known for her work on memory reconsolidation, and on unlearning traumatic memories and addiction.
Arthur earned a BFA in Digital Imaging and Photography from Washington University in 2008 and a Master of Fine Arts in Photography from Texas Woman’s University in 2011. While maintaining a love for abstraction and the portrait; Arthur’s current photographic work deals with self-image and technology relationships.

Context 2016 will run from March 11th through April 22nd, with an artists’ reception on Friday, March 18th.
A Juror’s choice award and honorable mention will be awarded. The Juror’s choice award comes with a $500 cash prize.
The exhibition is juried by Jennifer Murray, Executive Director of Filter Photo.
Open Theme:Juror and curator Jennifer Murray will consider all types of photographic work for this 2nd annual survey exhibition of contemporary photography. This open theme allows for the widest understanding of the medium and current photographic practices.

About the Juror:Jennifer Murray is the Executive Director of Filter Photo. She is a Chicago-based artist, curator, and educator with more than 15 years experience working in the city’s arts community. Prior to her appointment as Executive Director she served as Director of the Averill and Bernard LevitonA+D Gallery at Columbia College Chicago, where she organized a broad range of art and design exhibitions over an eleven-year period. Murray is also a founding member of the curatorial collective The Exhibition Project, for which she has helped organize exhibitions including Expanding the Frame, New Landscapes, and an upcoming exhibition at the Freeport Art Museum. She maintains an active photographic practice herself and was recently awarded grants from both the City of Chicago’s Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events (DCASE) and the Illinois Arts Council Agency. Murray is currently an Instructor of Photography at Loyola University Chicago, and she has also spent many years teaching as an adjunct faculty member at Columbia College Chicago.

Sheryl completed her BFA in Photography and Sculpture at Texas Woman’s University in 2013. She is currently the President of 500x Gallery and the Editorial Assistant for Light Leaked, an online photography journal.
Kalee is a photography-based artist and educator living in Dallas, Texas. Originally from Hobbs, NM, she attended Texas Tech University and received a BFA in Photography in 2005. Shortly after graduated she worked as a commercial corporate and aviation photographer before attending Texas Woman’s University, where she received an MFA in Photography in 2014.
