Monochrome images of any subject matter you choose. Digital, traditional silver gelatin, and alternative process images are all welcome. Tillman Crane has agreed to jury this exhibition and we’re thrilled to have his enthusiastic eye. He will choose 40 photographs for exhibition in the gallery, and up to 35 additional for the gallery’s Online Annex. All exhibited and Annex photographs will be reproduced in the exhibition catalog. A gallery walk-through and workshop with Tillman Crane!
He’ll be reviewing the exhibition, live and in-person at PhotoPlace Gallery on August 28th. It is such a gift to have the juror on-site, sharing the meditations that inspired his decisions. If you’re one of those whose work is chosen by Tillman, you’ll have the unique benefit of hearing him discuss your work and that of your peers. This will be an Opening Reception and an opportunity not to miss! The next day, August 29th, Tillman will conduct a half-day workshop in and around our home town of Middlebury, Vermont. Details on the workshop to be announced.

Until July 1, submit up to TEN photographs for $30, $7 for each additional.

About the Juror:

Tillman Crane began his career in 1978 as a photojournalist for The Maryville Daily Times. Ten years later, he began to teach his craft. While platinum/palladium photographs remain his passion, he was quick to integrate digital vocabulary into his practice. As the medium continues to evolve and Tillman along with it, the content of the artist’s images has remained constant—the ordinary, found in the everyday environments that surround him.
Tillman’s workshops are offered across the globe, from the Erie Canal to China. He teaches location-based curriculum where he is able to share his appreciation for translating the found into successful images, and also the art of platinum printing, to showcase one’s vision through hand-made prints.

For inspiration from Tillman’s portfolios, look for his limited edition books: Tillman Crane/Structure (2001), Touchstones (2005), Odin Stone (2008), and A Walk Along the Jordan (2009).  His work is included in several books on contemporary photography, as well as in collections worldwide. And if you’re in the Camden, Maine area, stop by his gallery at 22 Pearl Street, to see his latest masterful platinum/palladium prints.

Black Box Gallery will host a juried group photography exhibition on contemporary portrait photography. Pose and Gesture, Image and Identity, Documentary and Street, Constructed Narrative, Self Portrait, Environmental, Vernacular and Snapshot, Fashion and Nude, all have visual arguments to make in the world of portraiture photography. What is the character, attitude and expression that binds this genre together?

About Juror:

Kelli Pennington received her MFA in photography from Syracuse University. She is an instructor of photography in Portland, Oregon. Kelli works in both the fine arts and editorial fields. Her work has been exhibited and written about nationally and she has won fellowships and awards.

Exhibition Dates: August 1-20, 2015
Opening Reception: Friday August 7, 6-8:00 pm

Each exhibition will have 24 photographs selected by the juror for exhibiton at the gallery.
An additional 30 photographs will be selected by the juror for exhibition in our on-line gallery annex.
All 54 photographs from the show will be included in a catalog available for purchase on Blurb Books.

Rules/Guidelines: Black Box will provide Free printing, Free matting and Free framing for all of our exhibitions. The photographers who are selected into the exhibition by the juror will provide a high resolution Tiff or JPEG file for our gallery to print.

We have 18” x 24” black frames. Our white mats are pre cut for 12” x 18”, 12” x 12” and 12” x 16” prints (we also have a few other odd sized matts). We print on an Epson Stylus Pro archival ink jet printer, on Epson Premium Luster Photo paper, in a color-calibrated environment. This is a very accurate custom print, just like a custom lab would print, we have over 20 years of custom printing experience.

All exhibition prints will be kept in a flat file after the show for future sale and promotion for the photographer. This will allow the gallery to further promote our photographers and exhibitions to collectors, curators, critics and to the general public. Black Box will shread all gallery prints after 5 years of exhibition in the flat files.

File agreement for accepted photographers: Black Box will only print one exhibition print. If there is a sale inquiry, the photographer will be notified before a sale is confirmed, edition information will be discussed with photographer, the photographer will be sent a authentication document to be signed and go with the print to the collector. No sale or printing of file will happen without prior consent and agreement of photographer. All rights remain to the file and print with the photographer, to be used only with their prior consent. Exhibition print will not be sold, but used in our flatfile at Black Box Gallery only to promote the photographers work.

Black Box Gallery takes a 50% commission on all sales, 50% goes to the photographer. If artist prefers the print does not have to be for sale. Print will be for exhibition and promotion only.

Notification: All photographers will be notified 7-12 days after the deadline about juror selections.

Portraiture has been a staple of photography since the medium’s invention in the 19th century.  That’s why it is so hard to make a portrait that stands out among the myriad of pretty faces and brooding stares that populate many photographs.  The challenge of this competition is to make a a portrait that is uniquely of our time, a time when photographic portraits and selfies are produced in unprecedented quantities.  What do you have to say with the camera and the human image that no one has said before? – Juror David E. David E. Little has been curator and head of the Photography Department at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts since 2008. He has curated over twenty shows at the MIA, including “The Sports Show: Althletics as Image and Spectacle” (2012); “The Embarrassment of Riches: Picturing Global Wealth” (2010) and the New Pictures series with David Goldblatt, James Welling and Sarah Jones, among others.  His exhibition, “100 Plus: A Photograph for Every Year of the MIA,” is on view through October 18, 2015

Exhibits run from the first Friday of each month to the Sunday prior to the NEXT first-Friday. VCP considers all types of styles and subject matter for exhibition. Proposals can be for individual presentations, collaborators, workshops and panels from member photographers, writers,
educators, curators, historians, professionals and students. Topics are not required to be theme-based, and may include
but are not limited to, image-making, history, contemporary theory and criticism, multidisciplinary approaches and new
technologies, and presentations of work in photography, film, video, performance and installation.

Requirements:
1/2 to 1 page abstract, preferably in pdf form. Include title, AV needs, space concerns and CV for each presenter.

Minimum of 5 image(s) but no more than 10, if important to the proposal, sized to 1200 pixels on the long side at 100
ppi and saved as a jpg as Lastname_#.jpg. If selected, you will be asked to submit a higher quality representative image
for the conference program

Spheres of Influence
Oklahoma City rests at the intersection of many highways that cross the continental US. OKC is known for Boomers and
Sooners, sunsets, beauty queens, red dirt, tornado alley, and a capital with an oil derrick on site. The variety contained
promotes why the locality of Oklahoma City is the perfect place to explore how we identify and reflect on the many
guiding “forces” impacting our creative lives. All of us are affected by a variety of influences from history, culture,
identity, geography, politics, scientific discovery, mentors, and experience to name some. This conference hopes to
address how these spheres of influence impact us as artists, educators, and students and how this manifests in our
photography as discovery, investigations, and recording in our worlds.

CALLS FOR WORK are open to all photographers internationally. All processes and techniques are welcomed. Color work will be reproduced in black & white. Please follow guidelines closely.

ALL ENTRIES:
Send up to 12 images. No entry form is required, but please enclose a letter (or word document if submitting online) that includes your name, address, email, titles/captions, website, and any other information pertinent to your submittal. There are three ways to submit work: online, on a CD, or original prints.

TO SUBMIT FILES ONLINE:
SHOTS accepts files submitted online using wetransfer.com (a free service for files up to 2GB). Please use shots@shotsmag.com as the recipient address, and include your name in all files. Prepare your files per the specifications** and send them in a single compressed file (zip, rar, or sit). File size is likely to be somewhat large, so a high-speed internet connection is recommended. If you are not a current subscriber, please make your payment directly before or after sending your files. (Note: SHOTS does not review work on websites, and does not accept emailed files.)

Platinum, palladium, silver gelatin, mixed media, pinhole camera, plastic camera, collage, albumen, Daguerreotype, multiple exposure, cyanotype, salt print, photogravure, Van Dyke, tintype, photoresist… you get the idea.

Some alternative process, whether historic or thoroughly modern or both, should be at the heart of submitted work.  Digital manipulation alone should not be essential to the aesthetic of the final image.

Amy Holmes George has agreed to jury this exhibition and we’re thrilled to have her eye.  Amy will choose 40 photographs for exhibition in the gallery, and up to 35 additional for the gallery’s Online Annex.  All 75 accepted photographs will be reproduced in the exhibition catalog.

About the Juror

Amy Holmes George is a teacher, fine art photographer, and President of the Texas Photographic Society. She has held teaching appointments at Baylor University, the University of North Texas, Collin College and Stephen F. Austin State University, with a special interest in instructing alternative photographic printing methods.  Her dedication to Alternative Processes is evident by her co-founding “alt8”, an alternative processes group active in the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

Amy has exhibited throughout the U.S., as well as in Italy, England, France and China where her work has been featured in over 100 exhibitions.  Her photography is held in the permanent collections of the Getty, The Kinsey Institute, and the Fratelli Alinari Museum.
Submission fee: $30 for five photographs, $7 for each additional photograph.
